Weak chin: where it comes from and what balances it without surgery
A weak chin sits behind the lips and forehead when you turn to the side. Most often it comes from bone: a lower jaw set too far back or smaller than average. Posture and fat under the chin make it look worse. Bone doesn't change without surgery, but the balance of your profile can. 🧔

- A lower jaw set too far back, called retrognathia: the chin is a normal size but sits behind where it should. Most people with it were born that way, and it often runs in families.
- A lower jaw smaller than average (micrognathia), present from birth.
- Less often, a childhood habit such as long-term thumb sucking, or a blow to the jaw.
- Posture: a head pushed forward with the neck bent hides the chin in profile.
- Fat under the chin, which softens the line between chin and neck.
More than a question of looks
The Cleveland Clinic notes that a set-back jaw can come with trouble chewing, jaw joint problems and sleep apnea. A sleep apnea guide from NHS Dumfries and Galloway also tells doctors to check whether the jaw is small or set back. If you snore loudly, if someone has seen you stop breathing at night or if you feel sleepy during the day, talk to a doctor. 🩺
In children and teens
While the bones are still growing, an orthodontist can partly correct the jaw position with an appliance. This is when there is the most room to work: if your child has a clearly set-back chin, a consultation is worth it. In adults, growth is over and the options are different.
What balances your profile in adulthood
- 🧍 Posture: head stacked over the shoulders, chin neither tucked nor lifted. A 2004 study of profile photos showed that small changes in head and neck position clearly alter the jawline and the underside of the chin.
- Beard: short on the cheeks, longer and denser at the chin, it makes the chin look more forward. For a man, it is the simplest fix.
- Body fat: with less fat under the chin, the chin-neck line shows and the chin stands out.
- In photos: camera at eye level or a little above, head pushed slightly forward.
- Mewing does not move the bone in adults: our guide covers it.
Options to discuss with a doctor
A hyaluronic acid injection in the chin can project it forward without surgery. A 2023 review of 24 studies and more than 2,700 patients reports that most patients were satisfied, with results lasting from one month to over 18 months, about a year on average. Side effects were mostly bruising and temporary swelling, but one serious complication, skin necrosis, has been described. It is a medical procedure, so discuss it with a qualified doctor. GlowUpTogether never recommends surgery. ⚠️
What the scan measures
The GlowUpTogether scan analyzes your profile photo: your chin projection relative to the rest of the face, the angle between your neck and chin, and the position of your lips relative to the chin. On the front photo it also measures the ratio between chin height and philtrum height. Your plan then tells you which moves, from beard to posture, matter most in your case. 📸

Frequently asked questions
Can you fix a weak chin without surgery?
You can't change the bone, but you can balance the profile: beard, posture, less fat under the chin and, to discuss with a doctor, a hyaluronic acid injection.
Does mewing bring the chin forward?
In adults, no solid study shows it changes the position of the bone. The changes you see on social media mostly come from posture and photo angle.
Are a weak chin and a double chin related?
Often. A set-back chin supports the neck skin less, so the area under the chin looks fuller. Our double chin guide covers the causes.
What beard suits a weak chin?
A short beard on the cheeks and fuller at the chin, trimmed forward. It extends the chin in profile.
