Jaw and lower face

Square jaw: what actually works to define it

A sharp, square jaw is one of the most sought-after features, especially in men. Bone structure plays a part, but a lot of it depends on things you can change: facial fat, posture, your beard and even your haircut. 💪

Your jaw scored out of 10: angle and definition, measured on your profile photo.

Score my jaw

First: body fat

This is the biggest lever. With less fat under the chin and on the cheeks, the angle of the jaw shows. For many men the line becomes clearly visible around 12 to 15% body fat, earlier for some.

What helps: a slight calorie deficit, enough protein, strength training, and less salt and alcohol, which make the face puffy.

Head and tongue posture

A head pushed forward ("text neck") erases the angle between the neck and the jaw. Standing up straighter changes your profile right away, in photos and in real life.

Resting your tongue on the roof of your mouth ("mewing") is very popular. In adults, no solid study shows it changes bone. It may slightly improve how the area under the chin looks at rest.

Beard and haircut

A short beard, clean on the cheek and a bit fuller at the chin, draws a visible jawline even when the bone is subtle. As for hair, short sides with volume on top lengthen the face and sharpen its angles.

Minimally invasive options, with a doctor

🩺 Hyaluronic acid injections at the jaw angle and chin, or botulinum toxin in the masseters, can reshape the lower face. These are medical procedures: talk to a qualified doctor, who will assess the risks and a realistic result. GlowUpTogether never recommends surgery.

What doesn't work

What our measurements show

Across 78 adult faces, the jaw averages 89% of cheekbone width in men and 87% in women. It reaches 90% or more in 13 of the 78 faces.

The front-view jaw angle is almost the same in men and women (110° median). What makes a jaw look "square" from the front is mostly its width, then how sharp the angle is under the ear.

Measured on November 3, 2026 by the GlowUpTogether engine on 78 compliant front-facing photos (out of 102) from the Face Research Lab London Set (DeBruine and Jones, CC BY 4.0 license): 34 women and 44 men, median age 25. Method and limits (in French).

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to see my jawline?

It depends on how much body fat you start with. If you lose fat steadily, the first changes in your face often show after 6 to 10 weeks.

Does mewing work?

In adults, there is no evidence that it changes bone structure. It may slightly improve how the area under the chin looks and your posture, but it doesn't replace losing fat.

How do I know if my jaw is well defined?

The GlowUpTogether scan measures your jaw angle on your profile photo, scores it out of 10 and tells you which levers will do the most for you.
