Oval face shape: how to recognize it and which haircut to choose
An oval face is longer than it is wide, with cheekbones slightly wider than the forehead and a rounded chin. People call it easy to style, and that's true: most cuts balance it. The one real trap is lengthening a face that's already long. 💇

Try haircutsHow to tell if your face is oval
In a straight-on photo, an oval face has three signs:
- The length clearly exceeds the width, by about one and a half times.
- The widest part is at the cheekbones; the forehead is a little narrower, and the jaw narrower still.
- The jaw and chin are rounded, with no sharp angle.
Oval, round or long: don't mix them up
A round face is almost as wide as it is long. A long (or rectangle) face has nearly parallel sides and a straighter jaw. Many faces fall in between, for example an oval with a slightly square jaw: that's normal, and it mostly affects which haircut you choose.
The best haircut for an oval face (women)
Almost anything works: bob, layered mid-length, long hair, bangs, short cuts. Choose first based on your hair texture, then on what you want to highlight.
- To show off your cheekbones: a bob or layers that start at cheekbone level.
- For a slightly long oval: bangs or volume at the sides, and not too much height on top.
- For a high forehead: curtain bangs or a side-swept lock.
The best haircut for an oval face (men)
Most cuts suit you: classic fade, textured cut, mid-length hair swept back. If your face is on the long side, avoid adding a lot of height on top with very short sides: keep some length at the sides. ✂️
Glasses and beard
An oval face wears most frames. One simple rule: a frame about as wide as the widest part of your face, neither much smaller nor much bigger. For beards, a short, even beard or a few days of stubble keeps the balance, while a very long beard at the chin lengthens the face. 👓
The "ideal" shape? Not so simple
The oval is often presented as the perfect shape. Attractiveness studies mostly point to other criteria: balanced proportions, clear skin, overall symmetry and the eyes. A well-chosen haircut and healthy skin count more than the exact shape of your face.
Check your proportions
The GlowUpTogether scan measures the width and length of your face from your photo, scores each feature and suggests haircuts to try on your face in the Style tab.
What our measurements show
Across 78 adult faces, every one is longer than it is wide: cheekbone width is between 81% and 90% of face height for 8 faces out of 10. 📏
In those 78 faces, the cheekbones are also the widest part, ahead of the jaw (88% on average) and the temples (83%). Both signs of an oval are common, so the rounded jaw is what sets it apart.
Measured on November 3, 2026 by the GlowUpTogether engine on 78 compliant front-facing photos (out of 102) from the Face Research Lab London Set (DeBruine and Jones, CC BY 4.0 license): 34 women and 44 men, median age 25. Method and limits (in French).
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if my face is oval or long?
In a straight-on photo, a long face has nearly parallel sides from forehead to jaw. An oval face narrows from the cheekbones toward the chin.
Which haircut doesn't suit an oval face?
Few cuts cause problems. The one to watch is a lot of height on top with flat sides, which lengthens an already long face.
Is the oval face the most attractive?
No: it's the easiest shape to style, not a beauty score. Balanced features and skin matter much more for perceived attractiveness.
