Haircuts for round faces: the cuts that actually slim your face

A round face is almost as wide as it is long, with full cheeks and a soft jawline. To lengthen it, the right cut adds height and vertical lines and removes volume at the cheeks, without trying to hide your face. 💇

Is your face really round?

On a front-facing photo, compare length (top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin) with width at the cheekbones. A round face has these two measurements close together, cheekbones as the widest part, and a rounded chin. If the jaw is wide and angular, your face is more square; if it's clearly longer than wide, more oval. 📏

The principle: height, not width

• Volume on top of the head, to add length.
• Little volume at the sides, around the cheeks and ears.
• Vertical or diagonal lines: lengths that fall below the chin, wispy pieces, a side part.
• A partly open forehead: thick, straight bangs cut the face in half and shorten it.

Cuts that suit a round face (women)

• The long or angled bob: the ends fall below the jaw and draw a diagonal that slims the cheeks.
• The long layered cut: layers starting below the chin add movement without adding width.
• The shaggy or feathered cut: light, textured pieces that break up the roundness.
• The textured pixie: short, but with height on top and an asymmetrical lock. ✂️
• Curtain or side-swept bangs: they frame the eyes without closing the forehead.

Cuts that suit a round face (men)

• Short or faded sides and volume on top: quiff, pompadour, textured cut styled upward.
• A clean side part, which adds a vertical line.
• A short beard on the cheeks and slightly longer at the chin: it lengthens the lower face and defines a jaw. 🧔
• Avoid: a uniform buzz cut, flat bangs on the forehead, and long sides that puff out.

A full round face, or a double chin

When the face is round and full, or you have a double chin, the goal is to draw the eye upward and break the chin line. Cuts to avoid

• The short straight bob that stops at the cheeks or chin.
• Lengths that are all identical and very flat.
• Volume at the ears (tight curls at the sides, a "mushroom" cut).
• Thick, heavy, straight bangs.

Pick frames wider than they are tall, with defined angles (rectangular, softened square) that contrast with the curves of your face. Small round frames accentuate the roundness. 👓

What our measurements show

Among 78 adult faces, only 7 have a cheekbone width equal to 90% or more of face height, and none is as wide as it is long. Even a so-called round face is still longer than it is wide.

So the impression of roundness comes mostly from full cheeks and a soft jawline, more than from proportion. That's why the cut and lower body fat change the result so much.
