Almond eyes: what they are and how to make the most of them

You have almond eyes when the open eye is clearly wider than it is tall, with tapered corners and an outer corner level with the inner one or a little higher. It's a shape, not a score, and it mostly comes from bone and eyelids. What you can work on is the frame around your eyes. 👁️

How to tell if you have almond eyes

In a front-facing photo, with a straight gaze and a relaxed face:

What shapes the eye

😴 The eye socket, the position of the eye corners and the shape of the eyelids come from your genes, and no exercise changes them. Still, the shape you appear to have varies: puffy eyelids after a short night or a salty meal make the eyes look rounder and more closed. In a 2013 Swedish study, sleep-deprived people were judged to have droopier eyelids and puffier eyes.

Are almond eyes more attractive?

Not universally. A 2012 study compared "average" and "attractive" composite faces from several ethnic backgrounds. Among European and African faces, the most attractive had narrower eyes tilted further upward. Among Asian faces, a less pronounced tilt was rated more attractive. What all groups shared: wide-set eyes and eyebrows lower than average. So your brows count toward the overall effect too.

Options to discuss with a doctor

🩺 A little botulinum toxin can lift the tail of the brow, which visually stretches the corner of the eye. It's a medical procedure: discuss it with a qualified doctor, who will tell you what's realistic for your face. GlowUpTogether never recommends surgery.

What the scan measures

On your front-facing photo, the GlowUpTogether scan measures the ratio of your eye width to eye height, your canthal tilt and the distance between your eyes. An AI also rates the area around them: eyelids, dark circles, brows. That shows whether your shape is rounder or more elongated, and what really weighs on your look.

Frequently asked questions

How can you get almond eyes naturally?

Eye shape doesn't change without a medical procedure. Makeup, well-shaped brows and less puffy eyelids (sleep, less salt in the evening) give a more elongated look.

Are almond eyes and canthal tilt the same thing?

No. Canthal tilt is the angle between the two corners of the eye. Almond describes the overall shape of the eye. It often goes with a slightly positive angle, but not always.

Almond eyes vs. hunter eyes: what's the difference?

Hunter eyes, as forums use the term, are a special case: almond eyes with little visible eyelid and low, straight brows. Our guide on hunter eyes covers these criteria.
